Nesbitt Watermarks

Nesbitt Watermarks

All the Nesbitt watermarks are called in modren catalogs WMK 1, which is characterized by the letters POD appearing above US. There are three major varieties depending on the orientation of the laid lines of the paper relative to the POD US: (1) those where the laid lines are horizontal with respect to the watermark; (2) those where the laid lines slant up to the right; and (3) those where the laid lines slant up to the right left. The ones slanted up to the left (2) are by far the most usual. The are two varietions of (1) mainly differentiated by the distance between the chain lines. There are six variations of (2) determined by the angle of the slant and the relative positioning of the POD and the US parts of the watermark. There are no variations of (3).

I have chosen to illustrate the different varieties with scans from [bacon]
