First Series 1853 - Nesbitt Die 1
Paper: White and Buff
Working Dies: There are 5 'working dies' most easily
distinguished by the heads details here
Watermarks: All watermarks on Nesbitt entires are of type
wmk 1 (see 'Watermark
Types'). Wmk 1 has two major varieties: diagonally and
horizontally laid. Six of the varieties are diagonally
laid and two varieties are horizontally laid. These varieties
are not usually collected today except for horizontally ones
so the diagonally laid varieties of wmk are not illustrated
on the Nesbitt pages. The earliest issues of die 1 is very
rarely on wove paper with no watermark. (see
'Varieties: WMK 1'
for information on wmk 1 varieties.).
Knives: The white and buff entires of die 1 are found with
two knifes (Thorp 1) and (Thorp 2). The numbers assigned to
the different knives has gone under continual redefinition
since the the late 19th century and there has been a recent
major reorganization with the publication of new catalogues
by the UPSS. The Thorp numbering is largely chronical whereas
the UPSS organization is eaaentially by size. Personally I
find the UPSS reganization confusing and unhelpful so this
site uses the older Thorp numbers and references the UPSS ones.
