Stamps of the World
These pages are not really put together very systematically
but I have continually come across wonderful examples of stamps
from around the world and I could not resist the urge to 'collect'
them. They truely illustrate the history of our planet.
This page is really an index into other pages that contain
more detailed information and images of the stamps, many on
cover. As an index I have tried to include links from as many
identifying marks as I thought reasonable. This site also
includes an
Encyclopedis of Postal Markings, which includes markings
found both on stamps themselves and on covers that were mailed.
The site also maintains a fairly comprehensive
Glossary relating to both mail and 'stamp' collecting.
We will gladly update errors and omissions. Let us know.

Aitutaki is part of the Cook Islands, and lies about 140 miles north of Rarotonga. It consists of many volcanic and coral islets around a lagoon. The total land area is only 7 square miles. Access by sea is via an offshore anchorage with boat passage to Arutunga. There is also an airstrip which s to help identify the issuing postal authority
by looking up some word(s) that appear on a stamp. We cannot
guarantee that all words are in the dictionary but we believe
it covers the words founf on the stamps of the postal authorities
t in WW2 by American forces. The population is less than 2,500 and mainly Polynesian.

Area of eastern France taken over by Germany in the Franco-Prussian War. During 1870-71, there was a single issue for the whole territory. Stamps of Germany replaced this and were used 1872-1918. The area was returned to France after WW1. French stamps have been used since 1918 except for the German occupation in WW2 (1940-1944) when separate issues were made for Alsace and Lorraine.

Sited in Anatolia, Angora (now Ankara) is the present capital city of Turkey. The European part of Turkey, including the then capital of Constantinople, was under Allied occupation 19181923 following the defeat of Turkey in WW1. A provisional nationalist government was established by Kemal Ataturk at Angora, which he declared to be the new capital. Having expelled the Greek invaders of Asia Minor (19211922) and averted a war with Britain (1923), Ataturk was able to proclaim the new republic of Turkey on 28 October 1923 with himself as president. Ankara was confirmed as the capital despite the reinstatement of Constantinople (now Istanbul) as Turkish territory. During the period of the provisional government (19201923), various overprints were issued at Angora. In 1922, two sets of definitives were issued (cat. nos A79A90 and A119A124). These were replaced by the general Turkish issue (cat. nos 9741012) of November 1923.

Anguilla was administered as part of the St KittsNevis group but this was strongly resisted and Britain had to quell an independence movement in 1967. Anguilla finally became a separate entity on 19 December 1980, though it remains a British dependency.

Aruba is a small, rocky and semi-arid island in the Caribbean, about 165 miles north of Venezuela. It is one of the Leewards and is near the Dutch islands of Curacao and Bonaire. Oil refining was its major industry until 1985 when the refinery was closed down. Attempts are now being made to promote tourism. The population is cosmopolitan with Dutch the official language.
The island was occupied by Spain early in the 16th century. The Spaniards were driven out by the Dutch in 1634. Apart from a brief period of British rule during the Napoleonic Wars, it has remained a Dutch territory ever since, forming part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986.
The economic situation in the 1970s led to demands for separation. This was achieved on 1 January 1986 when Aruba was granted the status of internal autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is part of a Commonwealth that consists of Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The first stamps were issued on 1 January 1986.

Aegean island, one of the Dodecanese, which was formerly part of the Ottoman Empire and used stamps of Turkey to 1912 when it was seized by Italy during the Italo-Turkish War of 191112, becoming an Italian colony. The island belonged to Italy until 1943 and used general issues of Aegean Islands, overprinted EGEO, throughout that period. On 1 December 1912, Italian stamps were issued with the overprint STAMPALIA, which is the Italian name of the island. From January 1916, Italian stamps without overprint were in use. There were further issues for the individual Dodecanese islands in 1930 and 1932 but, for most of the period from 1930 to 1945, a general issue prevailed with the overprint ISOLE ITALIANE DELL' EGEO.
The island was occupied by German forces after the Italian armisitice in 1943 but this had no impact on postage. The Dodecanese issue remained in use until the British occupation in 1945 when Middle East Forces (MEF) stamps were introduced. The island was ceded to Greece in September 1947, whereupon there was an initial issue of Greek stamps overprinted SDD (Dodecanese Military Occupation) before issues of general Greek stamps began in the same year. The island formally became a constituent part of Greece on 7 March 1948.

Austria-Hungary
|
The Austrian Empire was formed in 1804 to anticipate the dissolution in 1806 of the ancient and maligned Holy Roman Empire by Napoleon. Austria, home of the Habsburg dynasty, had been the central part of the Holy Roman Empire. In the aftermath of Waterloo, Austria was one of the strongest nations in Europe and its foreign minister Metternich became the architect of the Concert of Europe which was able to maintain peace in a divided continent for several decades. Hungary, the land of the Magyars that lies to the east of Austria, was part of the Austrian Empire at that time but it constantly sought control of its own affairs.
Austria faced a crisis after its defeat by Prussia in the Seven Weeks War of 1866. To consolidate his power, the Emperor Franz Josef negotiated in March 1867 the Ausgleich (Compromise) with the Magyar ruling classes. As a result, Hungary gained control of its internal affairs and the two states of Austria and Hungary were federated into what became commonly known as the Dual Monarchy. The words Kaiserliche und K.nigliche on Austrian stamps refer to the Empire of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary, both titles being held by Franz Josef. The Dual Monarchy endured until the end of WWI.
Austria and Hungary had separate postal administration from the time of the Ausgleich although it was not until May 1871 that Hungary could issue its first stamps. In the meantime, a set of "neutral" stamps were issued that showed a profile of Franz Josef and a value. The fact of the Dual Monarchy was emphasised in stamps issued abroad by Austro-Hungarian post offices or military forces. Hence, reference should be made to Austria and Hungary separately re home issues and to the various Austro-Hungarian entries for overseas issues.

A group of islands 20 miles east of the Arabian peninsula and joined to Saudi by causeway. The largest is Bahrain itself. The site has been inhabited for over 5000 years. Bahrain was under British protection 1861-1971 and is now fully independent. Indian and British postal administration was used until 1 January 1966 when Bahrain opened its own service. Bahrain used Indian stamps 1883-1933. Since then it has had its own stamps but also used general issues of British PAs in Eastern Arabia during shortages in the 1950s. Issues during 1933-47 were Indian stamps overprinted BAHRAIN. During 1948-59 British stamps were used, again overprinted BAHRAIN. The first stamps exclusive to Bahrain were issued on 1 July 1960.

Bosnia and Herzogovina (Croatian Post Offices)
When the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was proclaimed from Sarajevo in March 1992, a civil war situation
escalated with Bosnian Serbs attempting to seize control of the country.
An immediate effect of the conflict was that the country split into three entities: Republika Srpska
(Bosnian Serb Republic), based at Pale, which declared allegiance to Serb-dominated Yugoslavia; the
Moslem-dominated central government based in Sarajevo; and a Croat administration based at Mostar.
The Mostar regime issued stamps inscribed BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA for four years. Some issues referred
to Croatia itself.
When the Dayton Agreement was finalised in November 1995, the Mostar regime amalgamated with the Sarajevo
government to form the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the Bosnian Serb Republic remained
separate. Combined issues inscribed BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA have been issued since 1996. In 1997, the currency

Bosnian Serb Republic
Following the collapse of communism in 1989, unrest between ethnic factions in Bosnia &
Herzegovina developed into open hostilities. In particular, Serbian nationalists began forming
Serbian Autonomous Regions (SARs) and these were rejected by the government in Sarajevo. The
situation escalated after the government declared independence from Yugoslavia in March 1992.
Despite world recognition of the new state, the Bosnian Serbs and the Yugoslav army attempted
to take control of the country and besieged Sarajevo. Before long, a Bosnian Serb Republic
(Republika Srpska) was proclaimed at Pale. It declared allegiance to Serb-dominated
Yugoslavia.
By the Dayton Agreement of November 1995, the country became one state with two autonomous
entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina; and the Bosnian Serb Republic.

Territory in southern Africa which was separated from Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) by the Molopo river. British Bechuanaland became a British colony on 30 September 1885 but was added to Cape Colony on 16 November 1895. It is now the northern part of Cape Province in South Africa.
The first stamps issued were Cape of Good Hope types with an overprint. Specific types were issued in 1887 but subsequently there were further British and Cape types with overprints. Cape of Good Hope stamps were introduced to British Bechuanaland in 1895 but, conversely, British Bechuanaland types were retained for use in the neighbouring Bechuanaland Protectorate from 1890 to 1897.

British stamps overprinted with Indian currency; used in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Muscat and Qatar.
Muscat and Dubai relied on Indian postal administration until 1 April 1948 when the British agencies were established. Two agencies were opened in Qatar: at Doha (August 1950) and Umm Said (February 1956). In Abu Dhabi, an agency was opened on Das Island in December 1960 and in Abu Dhabi City on 30 March 1963. The agencies also supplied stamps to Bahrain until 1960; and to Kuwait during shortages in 1951-53.
The agency in Dubai issued the Trucial States stamps on 7 January 1961. As each state took over its own postal administration, the offices closed. Closure dates were: Qatar on 31 March 1957; Dubai on 14 June 1963; Abu Dhabi on 29 March 1964; finally Muscat on 29 April 1966.

Cabinda
|
Formerly Portuguese Congo, this territory had protectorate status since 1883 and was separate from Portuguese West Africa. As part of various independence movements in the 1960s a group called Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) established a government-in-exile in Kinshasha. FLEC made a unilateral declaration of independence on 1 August 1975 but it was not recognised by Portugal or internationally.
In November 1975, Angolan troops of the MPLA occupied Cabinda which was annexed into the newly independent Angolan state. Angola calls the territory Cabinda Province. Since then, FLEC and other factions within Cabinda have struggled for full independence and seek to form the Republic of Cabinda.
In October 2006, a set of stamps was issued by the Cabinda separatists. All were overprinted Angolan stamps with a denomination of 500 Central African francs. The issuers stated their intention to produce a definitive Cabinda stamp based on a new currency, the Cabindan escudo.

A group of islands in the western South Pacific of which the main ones are Palau, Yap, Truk, Ponape and Kosrae. They were a Spanish colony from 1885 but there was no postal service as such until 1899 when the islands were purchased by Germany as the protectorate of Karolinen.
Karolinen was administered from Rabaul in German New Guinea. Issues of standard German Colonies types were inscribed KAROLINEN. These were in use 1899-1914. On the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the islands were seized by Japan which retained control until driven out by American forces in WW2. American
occupation continued after WW2 and the islands became a UN Trust Territory under USA administration 1947-83. Palau became independent in 1981; the remainder became Micronesia in 1983.
Used stamps of Japan 1914-46; used stamps of USA 1946-83.

Castellorizo ("Red Castle") is the French name for Kastelorizo, a Greek island off the southwest coast of Turkey which was part of the Ottoman Empire until occupied by French naval forces in December 1915. Turkish stamps were in use to 1915. French Levant issues were introduced in 1916 which are recognised by postmark. The French administration issued stamps in 1920 with B. N. F. CASTELLORIZO and O. N. F. Castellorizo overprints. The island was awarded to Italy as part of the Dodecanese in 1921 and was subsequently unified with Greece in 1947.

Castelrosso (Italian Occupation)
|
Greek island off the southwest coast of Turkey which was part of the Ottoman Empire until occupied by French naval forces in December 1915. It was awarded to Italy by the Treaty of S.vres and temporarily placed under Italian naval administration on 1 March 1921. In July 1922, it was incorporated into Italy's Dodecanese colony until it was ceded to Greece in September 1947. It is now called Kastelorizo and remains a constituent of Greece.
Italian stamps overprinted CASTELROSSO were issued on 11 July 1922. A specific issue for the island was introduced in January 1923 with the inscription OCCUPAZIONE ITALIANA CASTELROSSO (Italian Occupation of Castelrosso). After that, general Dodecanese issues with the overprint ISOLE ITALIANE DELL' EGEO prevailed through the period of Italian control to 1943, though Italian stamps overprinted with the island's name were again issued in 1930 and 1932.

Channel Islands
British territory since the Norman Conquest, having previously been part of the Duchy of Normandy. Alderney,
Herm and Sark are in the Bailiwick of Guernsey while Jersey has separate administration. During WWII, the
islands were occupied by Germany from 30 June 1940 to 9 May 1945.
British stamps were used 1840-1940. These can only be distinguished by postmark. During the occupation
period, local issues were used in Guernsey and Jersey after British stocks ran out. British stamps were
again in use 1945-1958. On 10 May 1948, the only general issue for the whole Channel Islands was introduced.
British Regional issues were used from 1958 till 1 October 1969 when Guernsey and Jersey began separate postal
administration and issued their own stamps. Alderney began local issues in 1983.
The 1948 general issue commemorated the third anniversary of the liberation. There were two values:

Comoro Islands
An archipelago in the Indian Ocean, north west of Madagascar. The four main islands are Anjouan,
Grande Comore (Great Comoro), Mayotte and Moheli. Mayotte is politically a French overseas department,
while the others constitute the Comoros Republic.
The whole group came under French protection after 1841 and were separate colonies during 1891-1914.
In this period, each island issued French Colonial "Tablet" types inscribed with the island's name.
On 23 February 1914, they were attached to Madagascar as dependencies. British forces captured the islands
from Vichy control in 1942 and, on 9 May 1946, they became collectively a French overseas department
called ARCHIPEL DES COMORES.
Stamps of Madagascar & Dependencies were used 1914-1950. The first Comoros issue was on 15 May 1950.
Independence was declared on 6 July 1975 as the Comoros Republic, but this move was resisted in Mayotte
which continued to be part of France and now uses stamps of France. Mayotte has a predominantly
Catholic population whereas the other three islands are mainly Muslim.

Crete was under Venetian rule to 1669 when it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. A long civil war developed
after 1840 which was only ended by a multi-power occupation (Britain, France, Italy and Russia) in 1898.
The island was declared an autonomous republic in 1899 and was united with Greece by the Treaty of London
1913.
Cretan stamps were overprinted HELLAS in 1908-09 during a premature attempt by the local parliament to
declare union with Greece. Greek stamps were imported in 1912 and were already in common use when union

Stamps inscribed in Greek were used in the British sphere of administration (Kandia) during the multi-power
occupation. Mail was forwarded via the Austrian office at Khania and surviving envelopes bear the stamps
of both the British and Austrian agencies. It is therefore uncertain if the British stamps had international
validity. Furthermore, there is no acknowledged translation of the inscription on the British stamps. There
is a face value and the other words refer in part to postage and to Heraklion, the chief town of Kandia.

Croatia
Following the collapse of communism, Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia on 30 May 1991.
Serb inhabitants revolted with the backing of the Yugoslav army and fought a bitter civil war against
the Croatian forces. In January 1992, a ceasefire became effective after the intervention of the UN
and the EEC.
At the time, Croatian Serbs controlled about 30% of the country, organised into the districts of Krajina,
Western Slavonia and Eastern Slavonia. These were recognised by the UN as peacekeeping zones and the
Yugoslav army withdrew.
In 1993, Serbs in all three areas proclaimed themselves united as the Republic of Srpska Krajina.
Elections for a president and parliament were held in January 1994.
In 1995, the Republic of Croatia began to recover the Serb territories. The army occupied Western Slavonia
in May and Krajina in August. Both areas were reincorporated into the republic. Eastern Slavonia
was placed under UN administration in November and called Sremsko Baranjska Oblast (Srem and Baranya
Region). The administration lasted two years before Eastern Slavonia as a whole was reincorporated
back into the Republic of Croatia on 15 January 1998.
The Republic of Croatia began stamp issues after independence with the inscription REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA.
